When you hear the word “survivor,” what comes to mind? Perhaps it's the memory of a traumatic event you overcame or a hardship you endured. For some, “survivor” harkens to the reality television series of the same name, in which contestants compete for a hefty cash prize. For cancer survivor and Survivor competitor Ethan Zohn, it’s a bit of both.

In 2002, Zohn won $1,000,000 on the third season of CBS’ Survivor: Africa. It would be his first of three appearances on the series. He also participated in several other national television shows, including Fear Factor, PitchMen, and The Amazing Race. While competing for the cameras, he was fighting another battle behind the scenes. Zohn was twice diagnosed with CD20+ Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He spent years undergoing treatment, including two stem cell transplants.

To help mitigate the symptoms of cancer treatment, Zohn turned to cannabis. He used the herb to treat pain, anxiety, nausea, and aid with sleep. Now ten years cancer free, he uses THC and CBD products to recover from marathons and demanding workouts. Cannabis & Tech Today spoke with Zohn via videoconference to discover what’s next in his journey of overcoming and thriving.

Creating a social media following is challenging, but it’s especially difficult for cannabis content creators. Several platforms refuse to propagate cannabis-themed posts and creators are accustomed to having posts banned or entire accounts suspended. To learn more about building a brand through social media, Cannabis & Tech Today spoke with Miss Rad Reefer, a cannabis content creator with tens of thousands of followers (hundreds of thousands before account suspensions knocked back her numbers). She shares how authentic, educational content can drive engagement and admits being a “cute chick” doesn’t hurt, either.

Jackee Riccio lives in Humboldt County, California. While many of her friends pursued careers in cannabis, she completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife Conservation and Management from Cal Poly Humboldt. She recognized early in her career that the community needed help. "I saw there was a great need in the cannabis industry for conservation and management for more sustainability." She created an organization to address that need. In 2017, Riccio co-founded Cannabis for Conservation (CFC) with partner Dane Curry. The non-profit focuses on land management and ecosystem functionality for farms. Cannabis & Tech Today Executive Editor Patricia Miller spoke with Riccio to learn more about the program and how other communities can reduce the ecological impact of their cannabis farms.

“In the city, city of Compton … ” Go ahead, let your brain sing the rest of the song. 2Pac and Dr. Dre’s Grammy-Award winning track “California Love” topped the charts in the mid 90s, adding to Death Row Records acclaim as a hit-making label. The West Coast franchise launched in 1992 under the leadership of Marion “Suge” Knight and Andre “Dr. Dre” Young. A year later, the label signed Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus, Jr. and released his first album, Doggystyle, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Skip past the conflicts and tragedy that defined Death Row in the late 90s and flash forward to 2022. Snoop Dogg, who found his start with the label before ultimately parting ways, took control of the company in February of last year and acquired rights to its trademarks. The label endured decades of controversy, bankruptcies, and multiple owners, but Dogg’s leadership is giving the brand a new foundation from which to build.

Part of his approach to making the label relevant for today’s audience includes a segment devoted to cannabis. Death Row Cannabis, launched in Dec. 2022, is focused on offering quality products at an affordable price. Cannabis & Tech Today spoke by phone with Death Row’s legacy cultivator AK and Dogg’s sound engineer and self-described “weed confidant,” Shaggy. They discuss cultivation, technology, and what sets Death Row Cannabis apart from the competition.
