Innovator Profile: Carly Bader and the Infusion Revolution

Year after year, innovators are flocking to the cannabis industry. The science of extraction, physical delivery systems, cultivation, and more is being driven forward by leaps and bounds due to acquisition of top talent in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Carly Bader, Manager of Science at Willow Industries, is one of the individuals carving out a space where science and innovation meet. With a background in infectious disease and molecular microbiology, Bader brings a unique perspective to an industry that has often straddled the line between art and science.

Her journey, marked by curiosity and a deep understanding of cannabis as both a user and a scientist, positions her as a leader in the burgeoning field of cannabis infusion technology. Bader’s approach to cannabis is grounded in her dual identity as a scientist and a consumer.

“It’s not just about ‘What’s my THC level,’” she said. “It’s about understanding the full profile of the product and creating something truly exceptional.”

Bridging Science and Cannabis

Bader’s entry into the cannabis industry was rooted in testing. Working in various labs across Colorado, she witnessed firsthand the increasing need for expertise in contamination control and quality assurance.

“I saw a real need for people to understand both contamination as well as cannabis,” she said. “As a user myself, I feel like I know the plant pretty well and can speak to the quality that I’m looking for.”

Her experience revealed common contaminants like yeast, mold, and heavy metals, especially in regions with environmental challenges such as wildfires. This background laid the groundwork for her transition to Willow Industries, where she now oversees the latest developments in cannabis infusion—a technology poised to reshape consumer experiences.

The Science of Infusion

Cannabis infusion, particularly in pre-rolls and other consumables, is one of the fastest-growing segments of the industry. Infusion involves incorporating terpenes or other aromatic compounds into cannabis products to enhance flavor, aroma, and even branding.

“Terpenes are everywhere,” Bader explained. “They’re in your air fresheners, your car incense, even infused waters. We’re just amplifying what’s already in cannabis.”

The unveiling of Willow Industries’ Halo machine at MJ BizCon 2024 marked a milestone in infusion technology. The Halo is a closed-loop system designed to infuse up to 40 pounds of ground flower in just 30 minutes. It prioritizes safety and consistency, addressing previous industry practices where workers used modified equipment, often risking exposure to volatile organic compounds.

“With Halo, we’ve created a system that is not only efficient but also protects workers and ensures a consistent product,” Bader said.

Meeting Consumer Demand

The demand for infused cannabis products is skyrocketing, particularly in the pre-roll market. Infused pre-rolls offer brands a way to differentiate their products and provide consumers with unique experiences. From seasonal offerings like pumpkin pie or peppermint to bold new flavor profiles such as marshmallow, the possibilities are nearly endless.

Bader highlighted how infusion allows for greater brand identity, likening the evolution to trends seen in the vape industry.

“The vape industry has been doing this for years with different flavors,” she said. “Cannabis is catching up. And it’s fun to think about things like holiday-themed pre-rolls or signature brand flavors that offer consumers something new and exciting.”

Navigating Ethical and Regulatory Challenges

While the science of infusion is promising, it’s not without its controversies. Some critics argue that adding terpenes to cannabis could be misleading, making products seem more potent than they are. Bader acknowledges these concerns but emphasized the importance of transparency and consumer education.

“If we’re adding something like marshmallow flavor, it’s clear that it’s an enhancement. The THC levels remain the same, and we’re not trying to deceive anyone,” she said.

Regulatory frameworks around infusion are still developing, often lagging behind industry practices. Most regulations currently focus on cannabis-infused products like edibles, with less oversight on terpene enhancements in flower. However, as infusion becomes more prevalent, clearer guidelines are likely to emerge, bolstering consumer safety and trust.

The Future of Cannabis Infusion

For Bader and Willow Industries, the future of cannabis infusion lies in innovation and collaboration. Their partnership with terpene company Abstrax exemplifies this synergy. Abstrax provides a variety of terpene profiles, both plant-derived and cannabis-mimicking, which allows brands to customize their offerings.

“It’s about creating something unique,” Bader said. “Whether it’s a loud, bold flavor or a subtle enhancement, we’re giving brands the tools to stand out.”

As technology advances, the possibilities for infusion will only expand. Bader envisions a future where cannabis products are as varied and sophisticated as craft beverages or gourmet foods. From tailored terpene blends to personalized experiences, infusion technology has the potential to redefine what cannabis can be.
