The Age of WISDOM: Bridging the Gap for Women in Cannabis and STEM

The cannabis industry stands at the crossroads of innovation and societal change, offering new opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Yet, despite its potential, the field reflects a persistent gender imbalance found across STEM disciplines, where women often face systemic barriers to entry and advancement.

Addressing these challenges head-on is WISDOM (Women in Science Demonstrating Outstanding Merits), a nonprofit organization empowering women in STEM through mentorship, professional development, and inclusive opportunities. With a mission to bridge the gap between academia and industry, WISDOM is creating pathways for women to thrive in fields like cannabis, where diverse perspectives are driving the next wave of innovation.

To explore how WISDOM is making an impact, Cannabis & Tech Today spoke with Dr. Dirk Frese, Executive Director of WISDOM and Vice President of JULABO USA, to discuss the organization’s mission, successes, and future in supporting women in cannabis and STEM.

The Birth of WISDOM

Cannabis & Tech Today: Tell us about the WISDOM organization and how it came about.

Dr. Dirk Frese: WISDOM is a nationally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit launched in 2017 with the foundational support of JULABO USA, a liquid temperature control supplier. After years of our own growth, we felt a pro-social responsibility to give back to the scientific community. Conversations with our customers revealed an immediate need to advance women in STEM fields.

Initially, we focused broadly on supporting women in STEM, but through hosting workshops and video podcast series, we identified our niche: bridging the gap between academia and industry. Industry needs talent, and students need mentorship to transition smoothly. WISDOM’s mission centers on providing that bridge, empowering women to thrive in male-dominated fields.

Empowering Women in Cannabis STEM

Dr. Frese: A key barrier is the low ratio of female STEM students—just 19% in fields like engineering and computer science. This creates confidence issues among women and reinforces systemic challenges in male-dominated industries.

WISDOM addresses these challenges by offering soft skills workshops, such as communication training, and hosting unique career development events. For example, we’ve implemented a “reverse interview” format, where students present their skills and research to industry partners, flipping the traditional interview process. This empowers women to showcase their expertise in a supportive environment.

In cannabis-related STEM fields, these challenges persist, but the potential for growth and innovation offers a unique opportunity to broaden our impact.

Partnerships That Fuel Progress

C&T Today: How has your collaboration with companies like JULABO USA strengthened WISDOM’s mission in tech and cannabis sectors?

Dr. Frese: JULABO USA, as our founding partner, provides crucial financial and logistical support that enables us to reach female STEM students and professionals. The cannabis sector, though volatile, has presented opportunities for meaningful impact. Partnering with organizations like the Good Life Gang allows us to create nontraditional platforms for advancing scientific discussions in the cannabis community.

Through these partnerships, we’ve supported female scientists and entrepreneurs like Nico Murillo, a chef-turned-aspiring cannabis extractor. Despite regulatory challenges, Nico’s resilience and collaboration with JULABO USA exemplify the power of mentorship and industry alignment.

Celebrating Success Stories

C&T Today: What are some notable successes WISDOM has achieved in supporting women in STEM, particularly in cannabis?

Dr. Frese: One standout event was “Connecting Our Talents: Women in STEM” in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. The feedback from students and industry partners underscored the value of creating spaces where women can connect with potential employers and mentors.

Additionally, Nico Murillo’s journey is an inspiring example of perseverance. While seeking her cannabis extractor’s license in Texas—a state with stringent regulations—Nico launched her CBD-infused cosmetics line, Bocanna. JULABO USA has supported her every step of the way, from product selection to overcoming lab challenges. Her story highlights how mentorship and determination can lead to success in even the most complex industries.

Looking Ahead: The Future of WISDOM

C&T Today: What are WISDOM’s plans for the future, especially in cannabis where women are underrepresented?

Dr. Frese: Our immediate goal is to expand our “reverse interview” events regionally and eventually nationwide. Long-term, we aim to make mentorship more accessible through technology, such as a smartphone app that connects STEM students with mentors regardless of geographic location.

In cannabis, as regulatory frameworks become more standardized, the need for analytical methods and safety-focused innovations will grow. This opens doors for women in roles like food technologists, chemists, and pharmaceutical researchers—areas where their contributions are invaluable.

Inspiring Women, Driving Change

C&T Today: Who inspires you in STEM, particularly in cannabis or tech?

Dr. Frese: Nico Murillo stands out for her dedication to using cannabis products to promote healing. She embodies WISDOM’s mission of passion and resilience. Beyond cannabis, Marie Curie remains an icon for her groundbreaking achievements in science under immense societal pressure. Her legacy reminds us why organizations like WISDOM are essential.

The Path Forward

As the cannabis industry evolves, so too must the initiatives that ensure equitable representation in its scientific and technological advancements. WISDOM’s work demonstrates that fostering mentorship and career development for women is a pathway to innovation and growth.
